The horns of a credit crunch dilemma: Should the police follow up on Rebekah Brooks’ comments that journos pay the police for information

The Met police may investigate News International regarding payment of officers for information. On the face of it this looks like a very good thing but delving a little deeper this is in response to a comment by Rebekah Brooks (the chief executive of Rupert Murdoch’s News International) made to a House of Commons committee in 2003.

It would be cynical to think that eight years after this information entered the public domain the Met are thinking about investigating themselves (and News International) as the phone hacking is about to spill all sorts of dirty little secrets. It would be unthinkable that such an august institution as the Met would take payments/bribes to divulge information to the hacks of Wapping.

Perhaps just to make sure this should be investigated by a force with less of a vested interest in the inquiry. They could have a little look at the Met’s involvement in the phone hacking at NOTW as well (while they’re at it).
