Study concludes infringing anime downloads increase DVD sales

This isn’t just wishful thinking from new paradigm fetishists. The Japanese Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry have looked into the effect of both YouTube viewing and illegal downloading of anime DVDs and found that there is some negative effect on rentals but a positive effect on sales.

I wonder if the tribal and enthusiastic nature of anime fans is a factor. As I understand it there’s a lot of anime out there and finding the good stuff can be hard. Perhaps this fuels a discovery desire, but is that so different to music nowadays?
